A howitzer, which was part of the funeral procession of Mahatma Gandhi, has been installed at the Sainik School, Bijapur to motivate the cadets to join the defence services.
The 5.5-inch howitzer of British origin was extensively used by the Indian Army during the wars with Pakistan in 1947-48, 1965 and 1971 as well as the war with China in 1962. The gun also played a crucial role in destroying a number of enemy tanks in Khem Karan in Punjab before it was decommissioned from service in 1998.

Air Vice-Marshal MK Malik, senior officer-in-charge administration, headquarters, training command, Bangalore, who inaugurated the exposition of the howitzer, said the installation of the gun would not only add to the ambience of the campus but also motivate the cadets to join the defence services. He said the howitzer was the first medium gun introduced in the Indian Army by the British in 1942.

Malik also presided over the meeting of 100th Local Board of Administration of the Sainik School, Bijapur on Friday in his capacity as the chairman of the school administration. The conference of the Local Board of Administration is held biannually to discuss issues pertaining to academics and administration of the Sainik School, Bijapur.
Shivayogi Kalsad, deputy commissioner, Bijapur and also an alumnus of the school, group captain BCS Bharati, command education officer, Bangalore, and Pradeep Rajanal, joint secretary, education department, attended the meeting.
The Sainik School, Bijapur is one of the two Sainik schools in the state. The second school is located in Kodagu district.
